에드워드 헨리 포트허스트는

젊은 시절에 석판화 화공과 삽화를 그리는 일러스터로 일했다.

25세 때 1882년에는 독일의 뮤니히를 방문하고 5년간 유럽생활 했고

특히 프랑스 파리에서는 보오노(Robert Vonnoh) 로 부터 3년간 미술 공부했다.

1892년 뉴욕으로 귀국하여

인상주의 화풍으로 강하고도 활기찬 붓질로 그의 개성을 표현.

그의 해변 풍경은

유난히 밝은 색조로 햇볕으로 가득찬 모습을 나타내고 있다.
